Miriam Cohen has been one of my favorite authors since I became a “librarian” in 1974. I still love her classic little books, Will I Have a Friend? 1967 and When Will IRead? 1977. When her book My Big Brother was reviewed, Booklist gave it a starred review and Kirkus reviewers called it a “real gem.” The book is about an African American family, but the emotions and expressions are universal: loving one another, learning to show that love, growing into new roles, and longing for absent family members. I found the book very heartwarming because of the timely subject matter;  however, the spare text and soft watercolor illustrations will make it a favorite of children and adults. In the book, the family bakes cookies to send to the big brother in the army. I have included a web site in my review where you and your students can contribute money to buy phone cards for soldiers in Iraq so they can phone home.  (Prepared by: Alleene Holland for SCASL Picture Book Awards, 2007-2008)
