A CHAPEL OF THIEVES
New York : Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 2002,

The year is 1849 and Henry Desant is on a mission.  He is traveling from St. Louis all the way to Paris to rescue his brother.  Clayton has become a preacher and writes that he has gathered a flock of believers.  These believers are able to get people to give them pieces of silver, silk, ivory and even furniture.  It doesn't take much to convince Henry that his brother is being conned and that the "believers" are just a gang of thieves who are using the church for their own gain.  So, off he goes to help Clayton.  Along the way, he encounters steamboats, autopsies, amputations, riots and even an appearance by Victor Hugo.  Join Henry as he descends on A Chapel of Thieves.
