The Roar by Emma Clayton is a Science Fiction read that could easily appeal to readers who do not think they like the Sci Fi genre.  It is not a happy book but it is compelling with a fast paced plot, video and pod fighter game simulations, bullies, and twelve-year-old characters with some very unique and individual talents.  The book is set in England, but in a dystopic future of unequal classes.  Mika is a boy who lives in a dreary house where in order to take a shower you first have to fold up a bed.  He is brave and a twin to Ellie who was kidnapped a year before the novel starts.  Ellie is Mika’s twin and was kidnapped for her special powers by a 110 year old evil man named Mal Gorman.  What are the pod fighting games he devises really for and just what is his special project?  Oh, and did I mention a pet monkey?  (New Hampshire Great Stone Face nominee, 2011)
