Scientists unearth a 3 million year old monolith buried on the moon, and trigger a signal emission aimed at Saturn.  Why?  A crack crew and a self-aware computer, HAL 9000, are dispatched in the spacecraft Discovery to investigate.  Unfortunately, HAL experiences some glitches and begins trying to defend itself from the crew while the crew tries to deactivate it.  The crew must overcome this deadly obstacle in order to complete their mission and find the source of the strange monolith, which may even lead them to humanity's progenators.
