Booktalk #1

After Clare’s mother passes away, her father thinks he can help her by taking her halfway around the world.  They pack up and leave Boston and head to Malawi where is will be working in a hospital.  Clare is definitely not happy about leaving all she knows behind to live in a place she knows nothing about.  When Clare volunteers to help out in a school, she sees the harshness of life in Malawi.  The poverty, lack of food, no running water, no electricity all haunt her.  But she also finds a community that is vibrant and full of life.

Booktalk #2

After Clare's mother dies suddenly, her father drags Clare off to Africa where he will volunteer in a Malawi hospital for the area natives. At first Clare is angry and can't understand why her father isn't grieving her mother's death, but slowly, she begins to understand that "sometimes even mourners must laugh with the moon" and she realizes that everyone hurts and heals in their own way. Read Laugh with the Moon to learn about the people of Malawi, Clare’s adventures as both a student and a teacher in a Malawi school, and how the people of a small village teach Clare about living, even when death waits just around the corner.  (South Carolina Junior Book Award nominee 2015,  Prepared by: Samantha McManus, Sullivan Middle School, smcmanus@rhmail.org)
