Booktalk #1

When robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is alone on a remote, wild island. With no idea as to how she arrived there or her purpose, she only knows she has to survive. She realized that her only hope for survival is to adapt to her surroundings and learn from the island’s unwelcoming animals inhabitants. As Roz slowly befriends the animals and begins to feel at home, the robot’s mysterious past comes back to haunt her.
(Sunshine State Young Readers Award Books 2017-2018)

Booktalk #2

This story begins when Roz, a robot, is washed up on a remote island. Determined to survive, Roz explores her new surroundings using her sense of sight, sound and smell to adapt to her environment. Along the way Roz encounters and ultimately befriends the wild animals inhabiting the island. She learns the ways of the wild from the animals and this serves Roz well as she cares for an orphaned gosling. Roz discovers that adaptation and interdependence are critical to survival. When the island experiences a harsh winter, Roz‘s programmed purpose “to help” is called upon to aid her animal companions. And when Roz leaves her island home she realizes this experience and all she discovered about herself and the world has changed her in profound ways. Roz’s adventure captivates from the start and raises questions about community, survival and the intersection of technology and the natural world. (Vermont Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award, 2018)

Booktalk #3

Roz wakes up on a remote, wild island with no idea how she arrived. She knows she is a robot, a ROZZUM unit 7134 and she knows she must try to survive this new terrain and make friends with the wild animals that live there. As time goes on, Roz learns to adapt to her new surroundings and the island begins to feel like home. But one day, more robots arrive in an airship--they have come to the island to retrieve her. What will happen when Roz is faced with leaving the only home she’s ever known? And will the other inhabitants of the island be happy to see her go? GARDEN STATE CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARDS, 2019

Booktalk #4

When five crates dislodge from a ship wrecked by a hurricane and smash into rocks on the shore of a deserted island, only one of the robots from the cargo remains unharmed. A curious band of otters finds the crate, plays with the box, and accidently automates the robot inside. Programed to survive, adapt, and help, the robot named Roz tries to blend in with the terrain of the island by observing and learning from the wild animals, even though she cannot comprehend their language. Yet, with time, she begins to understand the animals’ various “dialects.” During an accident, a gosling loses its mother. Roz tries to help it, but lacks the necessary knowledge. Sparked by Roz’s kindness as she mothers the baby goose, the animals begin to welcome her and help her save the gosling. A surprise occurs at the end involving robot hunters and guns that none of the characters are prepared for. What can Roz do to help her new friends?
