Bands play. Light sparkles on the water. Thousands of spectators gather on the banks while many more around the world listen by their radios. A chilly breeze makes the water choppy and sets the bright red flags with their stark black swastikas flapping. Adolf Hitler watches from a balcony as Joe Rantz and the rest of the 1936 U.S. Olympic Crew Team, all sons of farmers, fishermen, and loggers from Washington state, climb into their racing shell and wonder if they will be able to keep their minds in the boat for this race. They wear tattered sweatshirts. Their lead rower is so ill he can barely stand, let alone row. Joe has had to make his own way since age 15; depending only on himself. Now he must learn to be a part of something bigger, trusting his teammates to share the weight of the country’s hope. (Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Award Program, 2017) |
