The year is 2039.  The location is Mars.  Fourteen-year-old Tyce Sanders is living in an experimental community.  The settlement had been established in the year 2025 in hopes of finding a way to colonize Mars.  Earth was now too crowded and the resources were running out.  Two hundred scientists and technicians have been working in a dome trying to find a way to create an atmosphere that can support humans.  But now it looks as if it will be a failure.  There is a problem in the dome and the oxygen is running low.  Try as the scientists might, they cannot figure out why the oxygen producing panels are not working properly.  Tyce begins to keep a journal to let kids on earth know what life was like near the end of the Mars experiment.
