Sweet Far Thing is the third and final novel in the Gemma Doyle Trilogy which began with A Great and Terrible Beauty and continued with Rebel Angels.

In this continuation of the Gothic story set at Spence Academy in 19th Century London, Gemma Doyle is 16 years old and preparing for her debut.

Her mother has been murdered and her father is a laudanum addict. Is she in danger from "The Order" the mysterious group which her mother was part of? Is it safe to use her magic and, if so, how?

There are themes of self-discovery, of trying to be independent, and of wondering whom to trust.
