“Dear Audubon Society, as you all are aware of, the Oil Spill in the Gulf is devastating. My mom has already donated a lot of money to help but I have an idea that may also help. I am a decent drawer and I was wondering if I could sell some bird paintings and give the profits of your organization. My mom is in touch with an art gallery where I live. She is going to sell them these paintings. I also am hoping to go to Cornell in the future. I want to become an ornithologist. I know a few species of birds. I will do all in my strength to earn money. All I need is your ok. Here is a picture of a northern cardinal as a sample. Thank you for your time. Olivia, 11 years old and willing to help.” ~ From page 25 in the book.

This was the letter Olivia went to the Audubon Society which began her special quest to raise money to help with the oil spill in the gulf. To date she has raised over $200,000 dollars.

This 32 page picture book includes her Gulf Oil Spill quest but it also includes lots non-fiction information about different types of birds, all beautifully drawn by Olivia herself. This is an informative and inspirational book that illustrates how anyone, no matter how small, can make a difference.  (Booktalk by Angela Germany for 2014 Louisiana Young Readers’ Choice nominee)
