Maggie
Castillo is a fifteen-year-old Cuban-American girl with big dreams. She
wants to be a nurse like her wonderful mother, and she wants to date Zach
Sherwood, the blond basketball player who always makes a point of sitting
next to her in German class.
Right now, though, her dreams
seem so far away. Too young to qualify for a real nursing job, Maggie settles
for caring for an elderly woman who has broken her leg. She's also "settling"
in the boyfriend department. Instead of the gorgeous Zach, Maggie is pursued
by Justin, a boy with a disturbing past who's a math geek to boot.
Every morning Maggie picks
a jasmine flower from her yard and plays the "He loves me, he loves me
not" game. The flower keeps saying that he loves her, but Maggie is losing
faith. Zach seems so distant.
