Seventh-grader Olive has been used to life being just two--just her and her Dad. When her dad dies from cancer, Olive has to get used to life being two, but this time just her and her older half-sister, Maudie, who becomes her guardian.

Olive learns to manage her grief as she faces moving to a new town and a new life. As she settles in, she befriends twelve-year-old Jordan, who is losing his sight.

Through her friendship with him, Olive discovers the art of raising service dogs. She has always wanted a dog and yearns for this opportunity. Olive welcomes the chance to train  Lumie as a seeing-eye dog.  

Wanting a puppy for herself and training a service puppy are miles apart.
