Booktalk #1

The Crows are one of the many gangs running the streets of Ketterdam, and Kaz Brekker, the crew’s leader, is one of the best thieves in the city. When he is presented with the heist of a lifetime, he can’t possibly say no, but he also can’t possibly pull it off on his own. He enlists aid from six of his Crows, each of whom has a specific skill: the spy, the sharpshooter, the Heartrender who has the ability to use magic as a weapon, the convict with inside knowledge, and the runaway. These five individuals, each with their own motive, will follow Kaz on a potentially impossible journey, ending either in riches beyond imagining ... or certain death. Full of action, adventure, fantastical elements, and mystery, this will be a read that you can’t put down.

Booktalk #2

Set in Bardugo's "Grishaverse" (same world as her Shadow and Bone series), is this superb fantasy novel, Six of Crows. We starts in the port city of Ketterdam, where anything can be had for a price. Some of the town is upper class, but most of the story takes place in the seedier side of Ketterdam where the criminals lurk. One thief, Kaz, is offered a chance at a heist, what arguably could be called a suicide mission, which will make them rich beyond anyone's wildest dreams. But he can't do it alone.

He enlists a small group of people: a convict with a thirst for revenge, a sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager, a runaway with a privileged past, a spy known as the Wraith, and a Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.

This story is told in the alternating voices of all six diverse characters. What is at stake is none other than the destruction of the world as they know it--but they don't all like or trust each other. Can they pull off this heist before they kill each other?

A page-turner, read this if you love plot twists and being on the edge of your seat. It's sequel in this duology is already out so try Crooked Kingdom after Six of Crows to get the whole story!  (Booktalk by Toni Weller.

Booktalk #3

Kaz Brekker runs Ketterdam’s top street gang The Dregs. Efficient, ruthless and only occasionally charming, Kaz is the one to go see if you want results. When he’s hired by a collective of wealthy merchants to kidnap a scientist from an impenetrable fortress, his team must be as good as he is. On paper that team- a girl like a cat with a gift for blending in to her background and for scaling the tallest buildings, a sharpshooter with a gambling problem, a runaway with a mysterious past and a shaky hand with explosives, a man sent to jail by the woman he both loves and hates, and a heartrender who uses magic and her looks in equal parts to get what she wants- doesn’t look very promising, but Kaz is determined to collect his reward. With each member bringing a unique skill set to play, this team may be the only combination of people who can pull off this impossible job. Set in the Grisha world of her previous trilogy, Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows reads like a more magical Ocean’s 11 and is perfect for anyone looking for a little romance, a lot of adventure and a completely unique world to fall in love with.  (Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers 2017-2018 Nominees )

Booktalk #4

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price--and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone... A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums. A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes. Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction―if they don't kill each other first. (New Hampshire Flume Teen Award, 2018)

Booktalk #5

Kaz Brekker is a criminal who runs part of the seedy underworld of the Barrel, an area no good citizen walks in after dark. He always has his ear to the ground and his spies ferreting out useful information. When Kaz hears that the creator of a drug that augments the magical powers of users called Grisha is locked in an impenetrable prison where he will be used to alter the balance of power in Kaz's whole world, he is interested. Interested enough to put a team of malcontents together to do the unthinkable - storm the prison, abduct the prisoner and sell him to the highest bidder. Join a Heartrender, a weapons expert, the Wraith - a spy that can get anywhere unseen, a demolitions man, and a traitorous soldier as you return to the world of the Grisha in this fast-paced, magical heist caper.
