Vallie’s
father went out West more than a year ago to look for silver. Vallie
has been living with her Aunt and Uncle and their son Harold. Harold
has taken money from Vallie, torn up her china doll, and now he’s cut off
one of her braids. Vallie has had enough! She cuts off her
other braid, packs up her belongings, gets dressed in some of Harold’s
clothes, and goes to the train station and buys a ticket. Dressed
as a boy Vallie begins an exciting, cross-country trip. Will Vallie’s
mistakes end her trip early? Will the Pinkerton Detectives that are
looking for her be successful? Can she make it all the way to Aspen
and find her father? Read Silver Dollar Girl by Katherine Ayres to
find out what happens to Vallie. (Beth Lindsay, Senior Librarian,
Youth Services, South County Regional Library blindsay@leegov.com.
