THE GOOD DOG

What are some qualities you would want in a leader?  Intelligence?  Strength?  Courage?  Loyalty?  Dependability?  McKinley is that kind of leader.  He is head dog in this book, The Good Dog, by Avi.  McKinley protects and cares for his human family, especially their “pup,” Jack, who only knows McKinley as a pet and best pal.  McKinley is also responsible for leading the nearly three hundred dogs who live in the mountain town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
When Lupin, a magnificent she-wolf, comes to town to recruit dogs for her pack, McKinley’s leadership is challenged by his rival, an Irish setter named Redburn.  Redburn will do anything, even betray other dogs, to take McKinley’s place as head dog.  At the same time, McKinley must prevent his pup, Jack, from running away into the cold and snowy wilderness to find the wolf pack.  And he must use all his strength and courage to protect his friends from the dog-abusing, gun-toting human, Pycraft.
If you like dogs and thrilling stories of adventure and danger, you will enjoy this book, The Good Dog.  (Debbie Henson, deblib1@msn.com, Mt. Pleasant Academy, Mt. Pleasant, SC)
