Michigan was born to play hockey, and she lives for it too. Then, school budget cuts take away her girls’ hockey team. Unwilling to see her dreams die, she joins the boys’ team – where she clearly has the talent to play. Some are accepting, but the “hazing” she receives from a few teammates crosses the line. As the behavior escalates, she is in a tough position. Will she damage her standing on the team if she says anything? Can she be a teammate to boys that don’t want her there? Can’t she just play good hockey? Michigan will have to choose whether to persist, to complain to the coaches, or to quit the team. In a situation with no easy answers, Michigan knows she won’t get a neat ending wrapped in a bow, but she just wants to play hockey. Gritty, tough, pulse-pounding hockey action mixed with realistic teen behavior makes this a book with a message we all need to hear.(Mike Fleming, Juanita High School for Evergreen Book Award)
