Beagle is a ghost story, but it has an agricultural setting.  The step-father is an agricultural biologist who is hired to restore the soil of a farm depleted by centuries of bad management, and there is discussion of nitrogen fixing, no-till farming, and alternatives to over-reliance on chemical fertilizers.  The ghost's father was a seventeenth century enthusiast of agrarian reform, committed to new methods of his time.
