Cancer
-
"It Happened to Nancy" is based on a true story - in the form of a diary.
Girl starts out young (junior high) but eventually dies (AIDS) in later
high school years. Basic storyline is date-rape from a rather nice and
pleasant aquaintance, then dealing with the rape/self-worth issues, etc.,
then discovering that the aquaintance is a sexual predator (but does not
fit the typical sterotype). Along the way, her friends also deal with an
unplanned pregnancy and other teen issues. Main character also deals with
her parent's divorce, but family support for her is very evident. Main
character gradually weakens from HIV, then full-blown AIDS. Book ends with
her death.

Brisson, Pat SKY MEMORIES from Delacorte comes with a Parent-Child
Reading Group Guide. It is a 71 page book about 10 year old Emily who must
experience the death of her mother from cancer. It is a fast read, but
one that leaves you in tears. Beautifully written. Well-supported.
