Novels Set in Canada
Anderson, Margaret, _Journey of
the Shadow Bairns_, Knopf, 1980. Two Scottish orphans on the Saskatchewan
Craven, Margaret. _I Heard
the Owl Call My Name_. A young priest is sent to work with a tribe
of Indians in a remote island on the coast of British Columbia. He
is actually sent there to learn how to prepare for his own death, which
he does not yet know will come in 2-3 years. A wonderful, powerful,
inspiring (and of course sad too) story.
Hill, Kirkpatrick, _Toughboy and
Sister_, Maxwell Macmillan, 1990. Yukon Territory
Hobbs, Will. _Far North_ (Morrow,
1996), is a well-written survival adventure set in the Northwest Territories
(Virginia Falls and the Mackenzie Mts.) in modern times. Two teenage
boys, one from a native Indian tribe, the other a rich kid from Texas,
are the only survivors of a plane crash.
Hobbs, Will. writes interesting,
fast-paced adventure/coming of age novels for 5-8th grade students. One
of his latest, _Jason's Gold_, (Morrow, 1999) has great descriptions of
the Yukon Territory during the Klondike Gold Rush. There are several
allusions to historical figures - Jack London and others (some unlikely
coincidences), but an exciting, interesting story.
