It starts with an African man who is brought to
the United States and sold as a slave. He tries to run away after
he is given an American name. They catch him and cut off part
of his foot. He meets a girl named Belle. They marry and have
a daughter. During the labor, Belle told Toby that she had two children
before she had this baby. Toby decides to give his daughter an African
name. He gave her the name Kizzy. The book then tells about the different
generations. Kizzy has a son, George. The story goes on through
the end of slavery. The story follows how they go and get work.
