A mysterious, battered diary is found and the author is someone named Charlie Small. All that is known about the author, Charlie Small, is that he is an eight-year- old boy and that he has led a very amazing life; if you believe an eight-year-old could do and see all that Charlie claims he’s seen. The colorful, vivid descriptions about the events and places Charlie has gone are too clear for anyone to doubt he has actually visited these places. It all starts with a raft and a trip, which turns precarious when Charlie is thrown onto the back of a crocodile. Then he is thrown down a waterfall, runs into mechanical animals, and eventually ends up in Gorilla City. While at first Charlie is held captive, eventually he is crowned ruler of Gorilla City. Another hilarious adventure story that will draw students in with its humor, black and white drawings, and its adventurous spirit; roll over Huck Finn, there’s a new adventurer around.  (Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award, 2011)
