Kendra is finishing the 8th grade and finds that she has a new confidence in herself which makes a big difference. She and her brother Seth, who is finishing 6th grade, are spending the summer with their grandparents whose estate, Fablehaven, is a sanctuary for magical creatures. Grandpa Sorenson “had introduced her (Kendra) to magical milk that enables people to see through the illusions that normally concealed mystical creatures.” But now Fablehaven is under threat and they must save the “Artifact” which holds they key to the magic. The final scene is filled with magic and ends with a puzzle. This is a readable book that will make you want to go right on to the 3rd book, The Grip of the Shadow Plague.  (Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award, 2011)
