The 1970s were a time of change in the United States.  After years as a world leader, it was losing its strength.  The Viet Nam war was raging and becoming extremely unpopular. The economy was floundering with soaring prices. Arab countries grew angry at the United States' support of Isreal.  They cut off the sale of oil to the United States to protest which led to a shortage and long lines at the gas pumps. It truly was a decade of protests and change.
